Overview
Shanghai University of Engineering Science (SUES) is a full-time university with coordinated development of engineering technology, economic management, art design and other disciplines. Its predecessor was the Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering of Shanghai Jiaotong University founded in 1978, the Branch of East China Institute of Chemical Technology (merged into the Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1984) and the Branch of East China Textile Engineering Institute. In 1985, SUES was established on the basis of the Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering of Shanghai Jiaotong University and the Branch of East China Textile Engineering Institute. In 2003, Shanghai Senior Technical School (founded in 1951) was integrated into SUES.
The university has campuses in Songjiang, Changning and Hongkou, covering an area of nearly 1,400mu (93.3 hectares) with a total construction area of 480,000 square meters. Among them, the main campus of SUES is located in the Songjiang University Town, which is a modern, information-based, humanistic and beautiful garden-style campus standing on the upper reaches of Pujiang River and inlaid on the side of Sheshan Mountain.
Approved as one of the first batch of pilot universities under the Ministry of Education’s “Educational Training Plan for Excellent Engineers” and the leading unit of new engineering construction in local universities nationwide, SUES has been continuously devoted to deepen the reform of education and teaching, innovate the mode of talent training and improve the quality of education. The school adheres to the principle of relying on modern industry and serving economic and social development, sticks to the orientation of running a university characterized by application-centered modern engineering, and beholds the needs of modern industrial development as the guidance. It also connects subject groups and specialty clusters with the industry chain and technology chain, and takes the strategic cooperation of industry, university and research as the platform. SUES has constructed the distinctive mode of industry-university cooperative education featured by “trimester and work-study alternation” and the “Three-Cooperative Mode” of “Cooperative Education, Cooperative School-Running and Cooperative Innovation” between SUES and industries, becoming the cradle of outstanding engineers and engineering service talents with practical ability and innovation ability as the core. The graduates from SUES have obvious competitive advantages in employment market; they are active in all walks of life in the national economic construction and are generally welcomed by employers. The employment rate of graduates is 98.82%, ranking 24th in the 2017 undergraduate employment rate list of local public universities in China.
SUES possesses 9 sites of master’s degree programs for first-level disciplines, 3 sites of professional master’s programs, and 62 undergraduate programs (with major directions included). The university is now home to nearly 22,000 full-time students including nearly 2,500 graduate students. All undergraduate programs (except Sino-foreign cooperative programs) are based on a full credit system with a standard length of 4 years, and students can complete their studies within 3 to 6 years.
The university currently consists of 19 teaching institutions, namely, School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, School of Electric and Electronic Engineering, School of Management Studies, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, School of Material Engineering, School of Art Design, Sino-Korean School of Multimedia Design, School of Air Transportation and Aviation, School of Fashion Engineering, Sino-French IFA Institute of Fashion Designer, School of Urban Rail Transportation, School of Mathematics, Physics and Statistics, School of Foreign Languages, Social Science Department (Social Science School, Marxism School), Sports Education Department, Engineering Training Center, School of Continuing Education, and Advanced Vocational College, etc. It also boasts research institutions such as Shanghai Flight Simulation Technology Research Center, “Government Public Decision-making Support” Research Base affiliated to Shanghai Municipal People’s Government Development Research Center, Shanghai International Cruise Research Center and Shanghai Social Security Research Center, etc., among which “Modern Industrial Engineering Training Center” is a national experimental teaching demonstration center, and “Civil Aviation Flight and Operation Management Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center” is a national virtual simulation experimental teaching center.
SUES boasts 11 Shanghai key disciplines including “social security”, “chemical engineering of natural pesticides”, “modern automobile application engineering”, “garment design and engineering”, “energy science and engineering”, and 2 Shanghai peak disciplines containing “high energy beam intelligent processing and green manufacturing” and “science of design”. Both “Service Center for Safety Inspection and Evaluation of Rail Transit Operation” and “Industry-University-Research Development Center for Key Technologies of High-strength Laser Intelligent Processing Equipment” in SUES belong to Shanghai Municipal Knowledge Service Platform (Collaborative Innovation Center). The university has such provincial and ministerial-level base platforms as “Engineering Technology Research Center for Shanghai Creative Product Design”, “Public R&D Service Platform for Shanghai Fashion Creative Design and Digital Technology”, “Research Center for Competitiveness of Shanghai Strategic Emerging Industries”, “SUES Branch Center of Shanghai Social Investigation Research Center”, “SUES Government Public Decision Support Research Base affiliated to Shanghai Municipal People’s Government Development Research Center”. The National University Science and Technology Park has become a comprehensive science and technology innovation platform for the transformation of university scientific and technological achievements, the incubation of start-up enterprises and the cultivation of innovative and entrepreneurial talents.
SUES adheres to the concept of openness and actively implements the international development strategy. Its goal is to cultivate application-oriented talents in higher engineering who are familiar with international rules, and equipped with a sense of social responsibility, integrative competence and consciousness and ability of innovation as well as spirit of dedication. It has successively conducted a wide range of international exchanges and cooperation with more than 87 internationally renowned universities and enterprises in 21 countries and regions such as the United States, Canada, Russia, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and Singapore, etc., and have organized 11 Sino-foreign cooperative education programs. The university provides students with opportunities for various types and levels of overseas study and exchange such as doctoral degree study, double degree joint training, credit mutual recognition, joint graduation design, overseas internship and international industry-university-research cooperation. Every year, more than 2,000 students receive international education through Sino-foreign cooperation programs. At present, there are nearly 1,000 international students enrolled at SUES.
With the overall deepening of the reform and development of China’s higher education, the whole school staff and students have led the reform, transformation and development of school education under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and the spirit of the 19th CPC national congress. According to the goal of “three new steps” put forward by the third party congress of SUES, the university will vigorously implement the three development strategies of “strengthening school through talents, characteristic development, and internationalization”. Under the leadership of the Shanghai municipal Party Committee and municipal government, with the concern of alumni and all sectors of society, and with the support of partners at home and abroad, SUES will uplift the spirit, forge ahead, take deep root in China, and cultivate high-quality application-oriented engineering talents who are responsible for national rejuvenation. On the journey of realizing connotative development and building a first-class modern application-oriented engineering university in China, SUES will take more solid steps and make unremitting efforts.
